How To Draw People and Figures
Drawing faces and the human body can be
tough.
It can be one of the most difficult lessons
for an artist to achieve. The study of the human body is an option for
figure artists but there are other ways of learning the lesson of drawing
faces and figures.
In the book
Drawing People: How to Portray the Clothed Figure
the author provides a complete course on drawing.
Drawing People
focuses on the clothed person as
opposed to the nude figure. The first part of the book discusses the
necessary parts of any drawing-proportion, perspective and value. Books and individual classes
are one way to learn to draw.
The Big Book of Drawing and Painting the Figure
- The great appeal of depicting the nude in art is the very fact that we
are dealing with the human body in a way that gives us an insight into how
we have viewed our physical selves throughout the ages. This is a great
overview for anybody who wants to paint the human figure. It covers the
tradition of the nude, the basics of proportions and anatomy, a variety of
media, clothed and nude, various types of poses and models. Just about
everything.

How to Draw the Human Figure (Watson-Guptill Artist's Library)
One added bonus in this book, is on page 24, where a reproduction of Luca
Cambiaso's block figure drawing is shown. I haven't found that on the
internet, not anywhere. This demonstrates the method the Renaissance
masters used to learn figure drawing, and is the singular key omitted from
the faddish and gimmick drawing books ("Drawing On the Right Side of the
Brain" etc) on the market today. These block figure or Simplified
Figurettes were believed to have been passed around in pattern books to
the students of the Rennaissance masters.
