Cast
a soft, romantic light from this beaded treasure that will glow on any
table or in any room of the house. Simple glass seed beads add colorful
glitter.
Materials
 | Small glass votive holder |
 | Iridescent seed beads |
 | Fine (30-gauge) spool wire; medium (22-gauge) spool wire;
|
 | Needle-nosed pliers |
 | Wire cutters |
 | Masking tape |
Directions
Preparing wire:
| |
Cut three 8"/20cm pieces of medium wire for spokes. Ben spokes up
along the votive, making even spaces as you go.
Use tape to secure spokes to votive.
|
| |
Holding spokes together at center, wrap one end of fine wire around
center several times; do not cut wire.
|
| |
Bend spokes outward so they are evenly spaced around center.
|
Assembling
 | Slip several beads onto other end of fine wire.
|
 | Push 2 beads down to center of spokes, then wrap wire around first
spoke. Push 2 more beads down, then wrap wire around second spoke.
|
 | Continue pushing beads down and wrapping wire around each spoke in
turn, forming spiral. Push down more beads before wrapping as spiral
gets larger, forming base.
|
 | Slip additional beads onto wire as needed.
Continue adding beads and
wrapping as you work around sides of holder. When sides are completely
covered, twist wire several times around spoke; trim excess.
|
Finishing
 | Slip 8 beads onto end of each spoke; using pliers, bend each spoke
into small loop. Trim excess. |
A little about wire...
The wire process has appealed to craftspeople and artists for centuries,
perhaps because of the many types of wire available and the different
degrees of quality, pliability and adaptability. Before mechanization,
wire work was a labor-intensive process, but after many changes it still
remains a fascinating medium. Today, there is a renewed interest in
creating unusual and decorative projects using wire. Working with wire is
not confined to experts, and with a desire to create and some good ideas,
anyone can try. Make jewelry and ornaments, cover boxes and candle holders
or make a house decoration. It's fun, easy and the options are endless!

A Few Tips
 | Work with wire straight from the spool. |
 | Lighter wires (28 to 24 gauge) are easier to work with for finer
work such as home decor embellishments and making beaded jewelry.
|
 | Work the bends out of the wire by running it between your finger and
a dowel. |
 | 16 or 18 gauge is recommended for making jewelry.
|
 | When using beads, make sure the bead hole is large enough for the
wire gauge you are using or use a bead reamer if you need to enlarge the
hole. |
 | Tools such as files, knitting needles, wire cutters, chain nose and
round nose pliers are helpful. Be sure to use a tool that doesn't put
stress on your hand. |
