Embroidering on Monk's Cloth
Courtesy of Jo-Ann Stores

Monk's cloth needlework, also known as Swedish weaving and huck
embroidery, is a traditional handicraft that is experiencing a surge
in popularity. Fast, easy and portable, the technique uses floating
yarn designs to embellish monk's cloth fabric; motifs can be stitched
onto everything from tea towels to tablecloths.

Directions
-
Straight
Stitch. This is the basic stitch; all others are variations.
Stitch under one block of vertical threads and over one block of
horizontal threads to form a straight stitch. Continue to complete
your design.
Slant
Stitch Up. Bring the yarn out of the last block of vertical
threads as shown, then up several rows as indicated and under the
first vertical block to complete the pattern.
Slant
Stitch Down. This stitch is the same as the Slant Stitch Up but
worked in the opposite direction. Bring the yarn out of the last
block of vertical threads, then go down several rows as indicated
and under the first vertical block to continue the pattern.
V
Stitch. Go under two vertical threads on the right half of one
block. Bring yarn up several rows as indicated and go under four
threads. Bring yarn back down and under the remaining two threads of
the bottom block.
