Checkerboard
and Roses Bench
Courtesy
of Jo-Ann Stores

An easy checkerboard pattern creates a visual "trellis" for the pretty
print roses that highlight this charming bench.
Materials
Directions
-
Basecoat entire bench Blue Heaven. When dry, sand,
wipe away dust and apply second coat.
-
Tape off parts of checkerboard stencil that will not
be used. Tape off a 1" border along angled front panel of bench at each
end. Leaving a 1" border at top of front panel, center stencil and
secure lightly with tape. With dry sea sponge, fill in checkerboard
squares. Reposition stencil by aligning existing white squares to
continue design to the left of the original stenciling. Repeat on right
of the original stenciling. Align squares and add a fourth row of
checkerboard squares at the bottom to fill the panel.
-
Stencil the front of the lower support board using
the same technique.
-
Stamp a "practice" rose on paper and cut it out,
leaving a small margin. Position rose cut-out on the center of the front
panel over stenciling. Draw a faint pencil line around cut-out. Repeat
until you have five roses outlined, varying positions so leaves face
different directions. Fill in outlines with Baby Pink, covering the
checkerboard design underneath.
-
Brush paint on stamp as follows: Fresh Foliage and
Avocado on the leaves, Pink on the petals. Position carefully over the
Baby Pink rose shapes and press down carefully for a good imprint. Lift
carefully and repeat for all roses.
-
Paint a vine border around the checkerboard design
using a liner brush. Paint first vine Fresh Foliage, and second
intertwining vine Avocado. "Copy" the simple leaf design of the foam
stamp onto the corners and intermittently along the vines. Add a few
curlicues.
-
Referring to photo, use detail brush to paint one
ladybug on the front panel and another on the lower panel. Wings are
Pink and shaped like split circle split apart. Body is Avocado and egg
shaped. Add antennae and paint an Avocado dot at the end of each with
the handle end of brush. Add dots to wings.
-
Seal with Satin spray varnish.
