Just like humans we need to take care of our pet's teeth. What would happen to you if you stopped brushing your teeth of course you would have dental problems. Have the vet look for any diseases or tooth decay and advise you on what the best way to brush your dog's teeth. If your dog has any gum disease or damaged teeth brushing could be painful and he or she may even bite you during the process. To get your dog use to looking in their mouth try opening their mouth a few times and rewarding them with a treat after each opening. This way they will feel more comfortable with the exercise.
Purchase a pet dental kit from the pet store or online. The dental care kit usually consists of toothpaste (formulated for dogs), a toothbrush, and a finger toothbrush. Follow the instructions provided by the kit and brush regularly. If you are having difficulty brushing your pet's teeth ask your veterinarian for advice. Place your cat or dog on a comfortable surface and try to get them to relax before brushing. Look online for some tips on helping your dog through the process. Try to minimally restrain your pet while brushing, make it a pleasant experience for both of you. You may need to wrap a small dog or a cat in a towel for minimal restraint while brushing. Brush the pet's teeth with with a gentle yet massaging motion. The movement should be gentle and in an oval pattern. Once you have completed brushing reward your cat or dog with a treat. If you can try to brush your pet's teeth every day or at least every other day. Brushing your dog's teeth will help reduce dental disease, bad breath, and potential heart and kidney disease. In the long run it's another step in keeping your pet healthy .
